Mesquite Maintenance Technician
Description

Coordinates processes and activities related to vehicle maintenance and equipment utilized in support of transit operations.

Responsibilities

A bus maintenance technician is an experienced mechanic who is responsible for repairing buses. Work is based on a workorder or schedule performing repair and preventative maintenance on buses. Typical duties and responsibilities include:

  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance for any buses they are assigned.
  • Performing mechanical repairs on buses to include major overhauls if directed.
  • Making emergency service calls for stranded buses.
  • Alert parts technician, if necessary, stock is needed.
  • Ensuring that the shop/working area in a clean, orderly, and safe condition
  • Maintaining, repairing, and inspecting the bus tires and rims
  • Replacing and adjusting brakes, belts, and hoses
  • Performing complete safety inspections on buses, as required
  • Estimating the time, material, and equipment needed for assigned jobs if required.
  • Assisting with minor bus body repairs

 

Qualifications

Bus mechanics will need to have completed high school classes in automotive repair, electronics, computers and possibly mathematics. It is recommended to complete a vocational or other postsecondary education program in automotive service technology.

Mechanics must have at least 2 years of experience (or relevant schooling and 1 year of experience). Certifications are not required but mechanics should have knowledge in nine different automobile specialty areas: automatic transmission/transaxle, brakes, light vehicle diesel engines, electrical/electronic systems, engine performance, engine repair, heating and air-conditioning, manual drive train and axles, and suspension and steering.

Skills

  • Physical fitness and stamina, as bus mechanics will need to stand up for long periods of time, lift heavy materials and potentially work in small and cramped spaces.
  • Organizational skills, as they will need to manage the schedule of when each bus is to undergo maintenance.
  • Attention to detail, as spotting issues and restoring damage requires someone who can notice even the smallest imperfections.
  • Time management skills, as bus mechanics will need to ensure that repairs are completed before the deadline.
  • Dexterity, to carefully fix many issues, using various tools, which requires a steady hand and excellent hand-eye coordination.
  • Critical thinking skills are a must be able to accurately evaluate vehicle damage and determine necessary repair upon request.

 

Physical Demands

Physical ability to perform office and related work, including operating vehicle lifts, tire mounting equipment; stamina to stand for extended periods of time; strength to lift and maneuver materials weighing up to 70 pounds; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Individual must be ambulatory.
Work is subject to exposure to fumes, chemicals, and solvents.

Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:
Equivalent to a high school diploma and two (2) years of bus maintenance experience or (or relevant schooling and 1 year of experience).

Must be 25 years of age or older in order to operate company vehicles.

Must have own tools.

Licensing and Certification:
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's license.

PERSONAL TIME OFF (PTO) – PTO accrual is based at the rate of 6.15 PTO hours for each biweekly pay period for full-time employees and 3 PTO hours for part-time employees after the employee successfully passes the 90-day probation period. MISCELLANEOUS LEAVES – Court leave, military leave, parental leave, and leave without pay, (upon approval) for eligible employees.
